Jury motivation
With their air traffic control center building, Sadar+Vuga have managed to make a typology visible which normally does not register on the radar of our architectural culture. With its many openings, it successfully bypasses the security paranoia which normally characterizes this type of building. It brings in daylight to provide for optimal working conditions and offers generous recreational facilities for the flight operators to recover from their demanding work. With the erratic expression of its reflective band window facades, the building renders a fascinating mirror image of the Alpine mountains around Ljubljana and creates a memorable visual identity for a kind of building which all too often keeps too low and blank a profile.

New Air Traffic Control Center, comprising air control center with 24/7 amenities and office premises is a highly demanding and complex object due to the nature of the institution it hosts. It is designed to enable safety and high operational activity as well as consistent comfort for visitors and staff 24 hours a day all year around.
The building, located in the middle of the plot, consists of three parts: the central space; the double-height ATCC room, or the pentagon; two wings of offices on the first floor and public spaces on the ground floor.
Within, the object is organized by five levels of security zones with access control at each passage. The further one moves from the rim that holds administrative and rest areas towards the centre of the object, the greater the security level of the areas. The compact design serves to enhance the operational efficiency of the object, paths are short and manageable.
The particular geometric shape of the buildings skin, designed as parametric system becomes the main, immediately identifiable, feature of the building.
