Retrofitting and refurbishment
The project had the aim of enhancing the civic function of the building as a neighbourhood meeting point, by opening up the entrance areas to the street and making an obvious connection with the external spaces.
Other aim of this project was to reunify the form of the market, reintegrating the facilities which had sprung up around the building into the main building and giving it an enlarged footprint. More space was allocated to entrance areas in order to increase the potential for commercial activity and social interaction, even when the market itself is shut.
The project was carried out in phases because the market had to remain open for the duration of the building work. The award of the project was in fact conditional on this requirement. This imposed a time factor and determined choice of materials (for example, use of concrete pre-fab 3×3 panels and ABS plastic more normally used in car manufacturing) and construction systems like steel frames in the new structure.
Around the entrance two new underground storage levels were created to provide increased floor space for the new supermarket located in the existent underground.
