Studio Meem is an interdisciplinary design studio based in Cairo. Our work has been praised and awarded for articulating the specificity of the local ecology and the cultural heritage of the region through a contemporary voice. Since its foundation, Studio Meem has collaborated with a vast network of artisans and artists, with the conviction that cooperation enhances creative possibilities. The Studio’s inaugural product line PALMCRATE Off the Gireed, was awarded a Red Dot and a Good Design Award. Our work has been published and exhibited both locally and internationally. In 2014, we launched new product lines in the Ventura Lambrate Section of the Salone del Mobile in Milano. Studio Meem’s first architectural project was recently constructed in Kuwait. Its architectural design of a disaster relief center in Istanbul was shortlisted for a ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture AWARD in 2011. In addition to design work, Studio Meem is working on a forthcoming book co-authored with David Puig and titled: Sidewalk Salon: 1001 Street Chairs in Cairo. This book will explore the city of Cairo through the lens of an often overlooked object: the street-chair. In 2014 we collaborated with Mahatat on the design and construction of a “Wonder Box” a contemporary revival of traditional peepshow boxes that traveled with live performances in the streets of Cairo for the duration of a month.
