Maternity and Oncologic Parking
Location:
A Coruña, Galicia, Spain
Year:
2014
Winner of Crowd Award

The objective of the project is the construction of a new parking which gives service to the environment of the Maternity and Children’s Hospital and the Cancer Center of Galicia.
The plot of land is located in the surroundings of the Maternity and Children’s Hospital and Cancer Center of Galicia, leaving the plot bordered by its north, south and east side by the road which connects both centers. This road ascends from the lower part of the plot, located at the exit of the tunnel that leads to the Maternity Hospital under the AC-12, up to the Cancer Center area, generating a large natural slope formed by rock and vegetation, which is used to perform the excavation and fit in the parking. This arrangement creates several different levels of access from the street that borders the plot.
The building consists of 4 covered floors of parking, plant cover, and a plant access to the new plaza that connects to the Cancer Center. These plants are divided into two levels with a height difference of 1.60m, creating a system of staggered story levels, connected by ramps located on the longitudinal axis of the building.
The building is separated from the rock slope excavation in order to form a continuous gap of ventilation along the entire perimeter of the building. The building is conceived as a large car container, which fits into the quarry excavation. This container consists of a base of stone gabion, sheltering the two lower floors, which sits as the foundation of the building. Above this rests a lightweight facade composed of vertical metal profiles, which are positioned at different angles to create a sense of movement.
The building includes two cores of vertical communications. The southern module has stairs and elevator, and the north module escape stairways. These cores are separated from the building by the building patios, connecting the different levels through walkways.
A new public square is created at the highest point of the plot, in the surroundings of the Cancer Center of Galicia, connecting to the southern vertical communications core. From this core emerges the walkway, which bypasses over the branch of the AC- 12 and connects to the existing footbridge that crosses above the AC-12, and ends at the Maternity Hospital. This new pedestrian way creates a connection between the Cancer Center of Galicia, the parking and Maternity Hospital.
