There has to be a difference between building in Torino and Building in Toronto, two cities with different people, different geography, weather and temperatures.
We do lot of talking about energy saving and sustainability and often we refer to choices that are purelly tecnical and we refer to materials which we can control through technlogy. What if we try refuse automatic answering concentrating on the specific qualities or dis-qualities of a place and we try to use them to create a better building belonging trully to its place?
La Maison Glacé is an experiment with which we aims to connect the building to its surroundings through one of the prime carachter associated to the city of Toronto: Cold.
Cold is here used to protect from cold?
La Maison Glacé is a single family house with attached guest apartment which will self protect from the cold and from the winds of the nearby lake Ontario through a crust of ice which will build up in the first cold days of winter creating a barrier which will maintain a milder temperature close to the house.
It is a case study which will be tested in its parts to help to develop new solutions for residential houses for Indigenous people living in Northern regions of Canada.
