Innisfree selected Mapos Architects to design a unique experience for their NYC Flagship. The challenge was to convey the natural, light feel of the K-Beauty brand while embracing the context of New York City; glamour, grit and scaffolding.
Innisfree’s ingredients come from Jeju Island, a volcanic island off the coast of South Korea, known for its lush plant life. Mapos used those same plants to inhabit the upper half of scaffolding throughout the store, giving visitors an authentic feel of walking around the island.
Integrated into the top of a free form island in the center of the store is an explorable landscape of plants, testable product, lava rock, a washbasin, and a recycling area where guests can return empty bottles. Exploring this table draws visitors into the store and around the entire space, like a hike around the island. Floating above is a cluster of 35 randomly placed, and sized, round lights, inspired by the brand’s many beautiful images of bubbles rising through volcanic water on Jeju.
The back of the store features a tea lounge where customers can sit and Instagram their new looks while sampling green tea from Jeju.
Tucked behind scaffold is a partially hidden stairway to a flex classroom/meeting space which overlooks the front of the store and can be opened to the space below. The crow’s nest view back to the street is like a satisfying view from the top of the island.
