Lyft placed their new headquarters in 2 parallel, ¼-mile long buildings in San Francisco’s China Basin. STUDIOS launched a fast-paced, multi-phased effort to knit together disparate spaces into a unified experience and celebrate the fun and discovery of this growing company. At this critical point in Lyft’s expansion, STUDIOS took inspiration from Lyft’s core values in order to reinforce the Lyft brand. STUDIOS used custom graphics, a curated furniture package, light and color to infuse the space with the ideas of movement, innovation, and authenticity.
In a structure as long as four football fields, clear wayfinding is crucial. Gradations of pinks, purple, blues, and greens on columns and walls identify break areas, elevator lobbies, and other circulation elements. STUDIOS’ plans create “neighborhoods” with a series of interior gardens modeled on San Francisco’s popular parklets. Collaboration areas convert into desking and back again as teams expand and contract. The typically dark building core became secret rooms that surprise and delight, such as a hidden library, a game room, and a speakeasy entered through a portrait of Willy Wonka. The central dining area is complemented by pantries strategically spaced to be accessible throughout the buildings. The all-hands event space is located on the top floor with views to the ballpark and Third Street Bridge.
