The Park Royal Cancun Hotel is located in an archeological zone called “El Rey”, a ceremonial center that reached its splendor between 1250-1521. Its architectural style resembles that of places like Tulum and Xel-Há.During the development of Cancun’s hotel zone, the archaeological remains of the region were taken as reference, so the pyramid scheme prevailed through the 80-90’s. At that time, the maximum height allowed were 6levels, therefore the pyramid shape wasn’t completely defined. This was the case of the Park Royal Cancun Hotel. In 2015 the re-densification of the area was authorized, allowing the existing structures to be increased by 4 levels.Amezcua’s interventionconsists of 3 main design premises: first, to highlight the pyramid scheme, which grew 33 rooms, adding 2,000 sq. m on two levels. One more level works as a buffer between rooms, and the geometry was completed with the sales showroom.
The pyramidal shape was also emphasized with on the facade, coloring the shadows of the volume in monochrome tones. The second premise was to frame the showroom views to the Caribbean Sea and the Nichupté lagoon, while closing the view of the adjoining buildings. The third was to define the showroom’s shape based on the views, while considering the sales route studied by the company, whose process is linear and very controlled. The result is a 650 sq. m showroom that responds to this peculiarities plus a 550 sq. m skybar, adding a new hotel amenity, which became the first place in Cancun where you can enjoy the panoramic views of the sea and the lagoon simultaneously.
